Berjasa History 101

BERJASA is a political party established in 1977 during a time of political unrest in Kelantan when it was put under a state of emergency.

Its founding leader, then Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamad Nasir, was a dissatisfied PAS member and formed the party just in time to contest in the March 1978 state election.

This comes after a no-confidence motion was tabled in the state assembly, which his fellow PAS assemblymen supported while Umno and MCA assemblymen walked out in protest.

Mohamad Nasir refused to resign and his supporters took it to the streets.

This led to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong declaring a state of emergency in Kelantan and the Emergency Powers (Kelantan) Act 1977 was passed in Parliament.

It was an Act that was opposed by most of the PAS MPs and for that, the party was expelled from Barisan.

During the emergency, Mohamad Nasir retained the mentri besar post though ultimately the executive power was in the Prime Minister-appointed Director of Governor.

Barisan ended up forming the state government for the first time following the 1978 state election after winning 23 seats while Berjasa won 11 seats and PAS had two.

Berjasa joined Barisan and Mohamad Nasir went on to become a senator and minister in the Federal Government. The party worked with Barisan in the next two general elections. But after exiting Barisan, it did not take part in the 1986 general election.

In 1990, Parti Hizbulmuslimin (Hamim) that was founded by former PAS president Tan Sri Mohamed Asri Muda Hamim along with Berjasa and PAS joined Angkatan Perpaduan Ummah.

This new alliance — concentrated in Malay majority seats in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis — was led by Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who established the now-defunct Semangat 46.

After the alliance dissolved in 1999 many Semangat members joined Umno while Berjasa has been silent in the political scene.

According to its website, the party’s Central Committee had been reformed and restructured its constituency in 2009. Today, it is led by president Mohd Yusoff Haron.

After unveiling its manifesto recently, Berjasa president Mohd Yusoff Haron said the party’s role was to act as pendesak (pressure group) and pengimbang kuasa (power balancer) to safeguard the position of Islam and Malays in accordance with the Constitution.
